Сonnection of Suicide and Depression Essay

Recently, it was reported that suicidal thought and depression have reached an alarming rate which affects the mental wellbeing specifically among the youngster ages between 14 to 22 years old (Ranna Parekh, 2018). According to Shim and Jeong (2018), college students have the high risks of getting mental illness, especially those two mentioned before because they are in the transition period from merely pure teenagers to a stage of adolescent which eventually made them more fragile to be affected by an unexpected mental breakdown. Most of us, as a society, have observed sadness in teenagers which we are more likely to think that their sadness is due to hormone imbalances, moodiness, or teenage rebellion.

However, adolescent depression is a serious problem and cannot be denied its reality.

In Malaysia, these two illnesses, which are suicidal thought and depression were the major factors of suicidal rates of mentally ill people in the society. Due to this issue, suicide and attempted suicide are criminalized in Malaysia under section 309 of the Penal Code that stated that those who attempt to commit suicide and perform any act towards the commission so such an offence shall be punished with up to one year of imprisonment or with fine, or both.

With the current legislation, however, the question arises as to why suicide was made out to be a criminal offence in the first place and is that the right reaction to such an emotional upheaval (Farah Nabihah, 2019). There are so many arguments that have been discussed by the high authorities on this matter.

In order to gain fully understanding about this issue, the ones should know the basic definition of suicide. Based on one of the prominent sociologists, Emile Durkheim, he mentioned that the distinctive features of suicides is not the act that is performed intentionally, but rather that it is performed advisedly by the suicidal person which he or she knows that death will be by their own act. Thus, Durkheim’s definition can be defined as suicide which is applied to all cases of death resulting directly or indirectly from a positive or negative act of the victim himself, which he knows will produce a death results (Jones, 1986). With this knowledge, the factor of this, alarming issue needs to be identified too.

Along my journey in conducting the research entitled “Suicide Attempt vs. Depression among IIUM students” for my group project, back then, I often wonder why young people, especially the students’ depression and suicide are so prevalent in our nation. Today, the answer lies in the large amount of stress and pressure students experience daily. The students stress about many things, such as excel in the studies, gaining peer acceptance and parent’s expectations, simply to name a few. Students are focusing on these things while, at the same time, searching for how to fit in the world with their socialization skills.

When engaging in in-depth conversation with an IIUM student, one of the key aspects to note is that family harmony which relates to parenting style is one of the factor that lead the suicidal person to suffer these two illnesses suicidal thought and depression. According to Osafo (2011), religious beliefs and family harmony are cultural contexts influencing the interpretation of suicidal behaviour as a breach of divine and communal moralities.

In this suicidal person’s case, she did reach out for help through her parents, however, her parents were failed to understand and recognized how bad her illnesses was, while at the same time, stopping the discussion to any further solution till it cause a disruption in their family relationship. She had felt left out from her own family, while struggling with her illnesses by her own until led her to choose an unlawful method which is attempting suicide before she received a real help by outsiders.

One does not simply end depression easily. The depression individual typically fights feelings of depression until he or she either gets help he or she deserve or dies without it (Kroning & Kroning, 2016). Adults do not need to feel responsible to cure a teen’s depression, but should feel responsible to act in simple ways, by which first recognizing the signs and symptoms. There is the need to acknowledge teens who are depressed, to talk to them, to convey a message of care. Teens need to know someone notices them and more importantly, wants to find a way to help them.

Stigmatization and negative perception that were throwing towards the suicidal people, especially adolescents, may not even bring into solution however, makes them to jump off from frying pan into fire, plus adding the salt into the wound. It cannot be denied that depression is a quiet crisis which it should not be. In order to face this present era, it is very vital for youth to have strong emotional intelligence but in order to achieve into that level, requires more effort and support from every member of society, instead of stereotypes and narrowed minded judgmental towards them. Therefore, for a difference to occur, people need to acknowledge the severity of teen depression and the significant risk of suicide. The next time we read about someone attempting suicide, don’t be quick to judge. Instead, show them compassion.
