Main purpose of the paper: The goal of this paper is for you to become a mini-expert about a topic of personal or academic interest to you. Once you’ve finished your nursing paper you may know more about the topic than some scholars!

You will also practice academic writing, which is a skill that will be useful to many of you. Grading: I will be grading for appropriate use of APA (American Psychological Association) 6th edition reference style. Check out the following items in the left sidebar, as they will be particularly helpful for your research papers: \”General Format,\” \”In-Text Citations: Author/Authors,\” and \”Reference List: Author/Authors.\” The rationale for requiring APA style is that it takes practice to learn, and is used across a number of academic areas.

I will be grading on how well arguments made in the paper are defended. I will not be grading on whether your conclusions are “correct” or “incorrect,” but only on how well you use research articles to support your assertions.

The overall comprehensiveness of the paper and adequate support for your conclusions will be the bulk of your grade. Avoid use of first-person language (e.g., “I will explore…,” “I think…,” etc.). Use the first paragraph to provide a broad overview of the problem you are examining. The final sentence of the introduction paragraph should be a thesis statement (e.g., “This paper will examine the psychological and social consequences of alcohol dependency.”) A minimum of 8 references from peer-reviewed sources are required.

Specifically, I’m looking for journal articles (either research or review articles) that you will use to support your conclusions. Please visit my office hours if you have any questions about how to search for journal articles—I am happy to help. TRY GOOGLE SCHOLAR for your literature search—it is very user-friendly. Please avoid using direct quotes from these sources. PARAPHRASE the findings reported in the paper.

Books, chapters, government reports, magazine articles, and websites are not peer-reviewed sources. You may use these as supplemental sources if you wish. Cite liberally throughout paper. This may mean you will either need to use more than 8 references, or you will cite the same articles more than once. Be careful to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is unacceptable and, per DePaul\’s academic integrity guidelines, must be reported. (See plagiarism handout in the Content folder.)

Given the diversity in paper topics, each paper will be graded on its own merit, as opposed to in comparison with the class as a whole. I am happy to answer any questions pertaining to your specific topic via email or during office hours. You may also send me drafts to review earlier than one week before the final paper deadline.

The cover page (not included in the minimum page count), body, citations, and references (not included in the minimum page count) should be in APA style. You do not need to include abstract, or methods, results, discussion headings/sections.
