Nursing is a profession that requires precise application and consideration of ethical and moral aspects. It is evident that choosing the right decision in nursing matters requires sufficient sensitivity to avert cases of ethical and legal tussles. Nurses in various healthcare institutions face an array of situations, which may lead to intentional errors. Mostly, medical practitioners make mistakes that put their ethical and moral considerations at stake. The inaccuracies do arise due to inadequate staffing and poor working environments. Regularly, nursing actions bear direct impacts on the safety and well-being of patients. However, through ethical sensitivity, administrators can identify looming challenges and apply relevant strategies that ensure smooth running of operations. It is therefore imperative to incorporate better leadership and communication approaches, which allow for coordination in healthcare institutions, leading to desirable health outcomes Application and consideration of ethical and moral aspects.

Nurses join the field with the intent of assisting patients recover from various ailments. However, several factors affect the approach nurses take to provide healthcare, in a manner they believe is morally correct. When deciding on administering care to sick victims, nurses consider the age, gender, religion and also culture. However, they are required to be ethical in all their undertakings to ensure excellent service delivery. Dehghani, Mosalanejad, and Dehghan-Nayeri (2015) describe ethical sensitivity as being considerate of virtuous provisions when handling any situation. It involves predispositions that guide one into making the correct decision, which encompasses moral and legal obligations. Being ethically considerate in tough situations includes an interrelation between the cognitive ability to apply moral skills without bias that may arise from feelings and perceptions. In the nursing field, Esmaelzadeh, Abbaszadeh, Borhani, and Peyrovi (2017) posit that ethics entails identification of an issue that affects the provision of healthcare services to patients. During such circumstances, nurses are required to interpret patient demands through detailed observation of verbal and non-verbal behaviors. Through this facet, medical practitioners can deduce practical solutions, which observe moral and ethical concerns that favor patients Application and consideration of ethical and moral aspects.

In recent days, healthcare institutions face the challenge of high patient influx. With the average income of many households increasing each day, the number of individuals suffering from lifestyle diseases is on the rise. Through this aspect, hospitals face an increased number of admissions, a fact that compels the available nurses to overwork for better outcomes. However, the number of qualified nurses in many healthcare institutions is inadequate. More often than not, the limited number of nurses available is forced to handle many patients, a factor that leads to errors. In such circumstances, they experience high burnout rates, leading to upsurges in employee turnovers.

I personally experienced this situation when I was on my internship at a local hospital. The institution was understaffed, with the available nurses dealing with the burden of attending to all the patients. Frequently, the hospital superintendents would instruct the nurses on what to do in the quest to ensure efficient flow of operations. The instructions were given in an uncoordinated manner, often leading to mix-ups. Besides, the physicians would at times object to the directives, and the situation would get personal due to boiling emotions. The nurses wore out due to frequent movement and attending to multiple demands raised by patients. Such alterations meant that some patients would not receive adequate care, leading to undesirable outcomes. Specifically, the nurses often committed errors regarding medical prescription and administration. In such circumstances, the nurses executed ethical malpractices due to burnouts Application and consideration of ethical and moral aspects.

Ethical Implications

Shortage of nurses in healthcare institutions is a common problem in the medical sector all over the world. Twigg, Gelder and Myers (2015) postulate that mal-distribution of nursing personnel challenges their ability to uphold ethical values and beliefs, since most of them express dissatisfaction and moral distress. Particularly in my workstation, the nurses expressed their frustration with their working conditions, a factor that exposed them to possibilities of committing errors.

Specifically, the nurses complained of unrealistic goals set by the healthcare institution, stating that it was unachievable with their insufficient numbers. The hospital used to receive many patients suffering from chronic conditions. Such victims need round the clock monitoring, an aspect that requires adequate staffing (Montgomery, Spânu, Băban, & Panagopoulou, 2015). Through this facet, many patients were exposed to preventable deaths and therefore, contravening ethics in the provision of adequate healthcare. Besides, the nurses complained of moral distress, since they felt they compromised their ethical responsibilities of providing excellent services. Regularly, they committed to the provision of primary care and therefore, many patients did not receive the deserved care. Additionally, the nurses ended up working on an overtime basis to cater for the rising demands of patients, while trying to maintain the utmost provision of quality services without extra pay. Evidently, they suffered frequent burnouts, and this was an infringement of their fundamental rights as workers Application and consideration of ethical and moral aspects.

Role as Moral Agent

It is common to encounter unpleasant situations in workplaces which arise due to a combination of factors. However, as a role model, I would provide guidance to the nurses and the administration to ensure a smooth running of events. I would help the nurses comply with the routines and norms of the health institution in the best way they could. Besides, I would ensure that a cordial relationship between the nurses and the supervisors in the hospital exists. To achieve this milestone, I would foster better communication amongst all the stakeholders. Effective communication in leadership is necessary for the success of any institution (Westra, Clancy, Sensmeier, Warren, Weaver & Delaney, 2015). Besides, I would help the hospital management structure its schedule to be in line with the intended goals. This aspect would include setting funds for the recruitment of more nurses. Through this aspect, cases of unnecessary burnouts would diminish, leading to excellent service delivery. Additionally, I would ensure that every person involved in the provision of services in the institutions adheres to their obligations accordingly. This way, the healthcare institution would easily achieve its set goals, and patients would attain timely recovery Application and consideration of ethical and moral aspects.

Assessment of Leadership Style

It is apparent that various leadership styles may act as barriers or facilitate achievement of institutional goals. According to the Keisery Temperament Sorter, I believe that I am a competent guardian, since I would help the healthcare institution operate optimally. The Keisery Temperament Sorter describes a guardian leader as one who is dependable and loyal (Weber, Lee & Dennison, 2015). Through my leadership style, I display authoritative force, and would not rely on instructions to perform my tasks. Besides, I am loyal and afford the hospital much help in realizing its goals. I am industrious since I purpose to assist the administrators manage the institution in the most appropriate manner. My management strategies facilitate better working conditions for the nurses, an aspect that would guarantee desirable patient outcomes Application and consideration of ethical and moral aspects.

Nursing is a profession that requires the application of ethics in all its undertakings. Various working environments create situations which determine how nurses act, in their quest to uphold moral values. Regularly, nurses face many problems when caring for the patients. Specifically, understaffing constrains nurses to unfavorable working conditions, which may lead to errors. I witnessed how short-staffed nurses committed avoidable mistakes during my internship. As a role model, I would help the administration provide favorable working environments through adequate staffing. Through the Keisery Temperament Sorter, I believe I am a guardian, since I advocate for competency amongst employees, provided the working conditions are optimal. This aspect is important especially to healthcare institutions, since it would guarantee better patient outcomes Application and consideration of ethical and moral aspects.
