Nursing personnel play an important role in the management of children’s health. This is based on their knowledge of diseases and health concerns. Also, they are well positioned to identify incidences of ill health or risk. On principle, they have the central responsibility of providing medical care. This means that if faced with a child requiring care, they would be responsible for providing the required medical care (Woods, 2014). With regards to nurses’ management of medical conditions requiring vaccines, the nurses would be concerned with informing the parents, assessing the child’s condition, providing education about control and prevention, screening, and making referrals. This action show concern for risk and incidence with the intention of facilitating control and prevention (Potter et al., 2018).

In the present case, a patient is presented for routine physical examination but the parents have already expressed an aversion to vaccination. The situation presents an ethical concern to the nurse since he or she has the primary responsibility of addressing the patient’s care needs while the parents have already restricted that capacity. In addressing the case, there is a need to understand that ethical situations consists of three questions. The first question is what should the nurse do since there are a range of options ranging from conceding to the parents demands to ignoring their demands. The next question is what will the nurse do based on the prevailing situation. If there is no need for a vaccination, then the nurse would passively follow the parents’ demands. On the other hand, should there be a need for vaccination, then the nurse would either ignore the parents’ demand and provide the vaccination or convince them that the vaccination is necessary. The final question would be how the decision make affect the different stakeholders. Ignoring the parent’s demand could attract legal suits while conceding to those demands could place the patient at risk (Marquis, B. L. & Huston, 2014). Assignment: Ethical Concerns Sample

As a nurse, I would first evaluate the patient’s condition and determine if there is a need for vaccination. The ethical dilemma will not exist if the patient does not require vaccination. On the other hand, it would exist if he requires vaccination. Should he require vaccination, then the next step is to prevent the parents with evidence and education material to show that the patient requires vaccination to maintain good health. If the parents are not convinced about the need for vaccination, then the next step would be to approach the court system under urgency to determine whether a public representative would be necessary to make medication decisions for the patient who is a minor. The argument would be that the parents are not acting in the best interest of the patient and could place him in imminent danger of harm. The court’s decision is important to avoid future legal action. Should the court decide that the parents are not fit to make care decisions for the patient, then a court-appointed representative would be appointed to make the decision that would support the vaccination. On the other hand, if the parents retain the right to make medical decisions for the patient, then there would be no opportunity for the patient to be vaccination and the nurse has no other option other than to respect the parents’ demands.
