Discussion #3 Tissue Review

Download the Discussion #3 Tissue Review(1)(1).docx file. Fill in the blanks and highlight your anwers so that they are easily seen. Copy and paste the information with filled in answers into the text editor (instead of uploading the file) so that your peers don’t have to download files to see them. (see below)

Compare your answers with your peers use number next to blank to indicate what question you are referring to. You should be able to come up with a difference between you and at least one other student. EITHER let them know you believe they made a mistake (using netiquette – proper online etiquette) OR let them know that you came up with a different answer and you believe you are both right BY REPLYING TO THEIR POST. You may not post a difference already pointed out by another student.

Fill in the blanks and highlight each answer.

Epithelial Tissues

  • Location: In general, epithelial tissues are found in epithelia and in glandular tissue.
    • Epithelia (singular, epithelium)
      • Cover body surface; i.e. skin
      • Line internal structures
        • Line inside of ventral body cavity organs i.e. (1)_fill in blank________membranes in stomach
        • Line outside of ventral body cavity organs i.e. serous membranes around stomach
  • What are the 2 criteria used in naming most epithelial tissues?   (2)                                                                          (3)

Connective Tissues

  • Connective Tissues are unlike each other.  For example, bone, blood, and adipose tissue are very different from each other.  Therefore, why are all those tissues under connective tissue?  What do they all share (other than the 3 components mentioned below)? (4)
  • What are the main 3 components of connective tissue?  As you go through each connective tissue, keep these 3 in mind.                                                                                                     (5)                                                          (6)                                                                          (7)

Muscle Tissues

  • What do all 3 types of muscle tissue have in common? (8)
  • What does each specific kind of muscle tissue have that is not seen in the other 2? I provided one example of how smooth muscle is different from other two, you provide at least one more for smooth muscle and one for skeletal and cardiac muscle.
  • Skeletal Muscle (9)  striated
  • Smooth Muscle (10)nonstriated
  • Cardiac Muscle (11) striated

Nervous Tissues

  • Is nervous tissue seen in epithelial tissue? If so, explain where it is and what is doing there. (12)
  • Is nervous tissue seen in connective tissue? If so, explain where it is and what is doing there. (13)
  • Is nervous tissue seen in muscle tissue? If so, explain where it is and what is doing there. (14)

General Tissue Question

  • Which tissue (epithelial, connective, muscle or nervous) has the highest regeneration rates?  Which have the lowest?                                                                                                                   Highest (15)                                                                      Lowest (16)
  • Cell structures such as microvilli, cilia and goblet cells are seen in mostly in (17)                                                                                        type of tissue.  Know the function of each cell structure.

Membranes (Cutaneous, Mucous, Serous)

  • Membranes are made of layer of epithelium and layer of connective tissue.
  • Cutaneous Membranes are made of which specific kind of epithelium (18)
  • Mucous membranes are made of a layer of epithelium and a layer of connective tissue (called lamina propria).  The epithelial layer of mucous membranes can be made all 8 types of epithelial tissue except (19)                                                              (specific kind of tissue).
