Compare and contrast distance education and traditional classroom education. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches? Based on your analysis, which approach is more effective for nursing education (or are they equally important) and why?
Distance education (DE) and traditional classroom education (TCE) represent two contrasting education environments differentiated by geographical setting. In fact, the merits enjoyed by one education environment would typically be a demerit for the contrasting education environment. To be more concise, DE presents four advantages that translate into disadvantages for TCE. Firstly, DE can be conducted at the learner’s pace of study whereas TCE follows a study pace the educator considers appropriate. Secondly, DE allows leaners to determine where and when to study whereas TCE has fixed position and times. Thirdly, DE has no consideration for location since the learner simply requires an internet connection to study while TCE requires physical presence in terms of residence. Finally, DE has lower learning costs when compared to TCE. On the other hand, TCE offers one advantage that translates into a disadvantage for DE. TCE allows for interactions and conviviality of being in an institution and engaging with other students on a regular basis while DE isolates learners who end up feeling lonely even with frequent online interactions. Still, it is important to note that the two education environment present learners with an opportunity to gain transferable and useful skills to include research and planning. Also, the two environments offer dedicated support to learners (Benner et al., 2010; Simonson, 2013).

Based on the advantages and disadvantages presented for the two learning environments, DE would be more effective for nursing education. That is because it allows learners to set a personal study pace, deciding when and where to study, does not consider residential location, it costs less, and allows for transfer to both practical skills and theoretical knowledge. Other than the lack of close interaction with other students, DE can be considered advantageous. Educating Nurses Sample Research

Present the history of one form of distance learning (other than online learning). Explain how the distance learning format originated. Would you consider using it in your practice? Address the advantages and disadvantages of the selected distance education format.
Hybrid distance learning includes elements of both synchronous (same time) and asynchronous learning (different times). It uses text, audio and video medium to transmit learning material where by students would be required to attend the Internet chat room or classroom at fixed times but complete their assignments at different times although within a set timeline. This format of distance learning originate from a need to address the shrinking classroom space to accommodate all the course loads. Rather than deny students an opportunity to learn owing to lack of adequate space, hybrid distance learning was developed to capitalize on online resources (Campus Explorer, 2018). This learning format is considered advantageous since it allows institutions to enroll a lot of students, it is cheaper, and allows students to engage in other activities (such as working) even when learning. On the other hand, it can be considered disadvantageous since interactions between educators and learners is minimized although this can be addressed through dedicated online forums and Internet chat rooms (Simonson, 2013). Owing to the advantages presented by hybrid distance learning, particularly with regards to space management and accommodate of course loads, I would consider using it in my practice to ensure that space does not limit prospective students’ capacity to enroll and learn.

National Institutes of Health (2018) offers information on how to determine the credibility of online resources. It mentions five important points. Firstly, it identifies the minimal qualification for a credible resources in terms of content and author. Secondly, it makes a distinction on the expectations for news and advertisements. Thirdly, it offers information on how persons who use online information can protect themselves. Fourthly, it presents important considerations to be made. Finally, it offers links to other resources with more information on how to determine the credibility of online resources. Although I did not know that this website existed initially, I now consider it an important reference material. That is because I extensively use online resources, particularly when collecting the most current information. Occasionally some of the sites present me with information whose credibility is questionable (Billings & Halstead, 2016). Using the information presented in National Institutes of Health (2018), I am more confident in my capacity to evaluate the credibility of online resources thereby increasing my assurance of collecting useful information.
