Research project refers to activities intended to validate existing knowledge about a phenomenon or generate new knowledge about a phenomenon. Unlike EBP, research zealously guards against bias while using non-partial approaches to explain the objectives. The approaches would entail using statistical analysis and talking about phenomena and variables that would not be used in EBP (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2014). For instance, carrying out a study to determine how specific changes in care approaches affect medical outcomes in terms of percentages. On the other hand, evidence-based practice is used to close the gap between practice and research. It evaluates the results of the research study and data quality while integrating the collected information with expert opinion to identify how best to implement the proposed change to optimize outcomes (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2014). For instance, if a research study shows that a practice change would improve care outcomes by 10%, EBP would integrate the research results with expert opinion to show how the facility can apply the proposed changes to achieve 10% improvement in care outcomes.

Nurses would be interested in learning about EBP as a strategy for looking at the ‘why’ aspect of nursing practice after research has looked at the ‘what’ aspect. Given that nursing personnel are always concerned with achieving improvement in their processes and methods, EBP facilitates the achievement of this objective by helping them to tailor research results for the best outcomes and achieving direct benefits (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2014). Question 2: “How would a nurse practitioner and a nurse manager differ with regard to how they use and incorporate EBP in their areas of practice?”

A nurse practitioner takes accountability and ownership for driving quality improvement to encourage EBP. In fact, within EBP, nursing practitioners act as team members and leaders to identify areas causing problems while assembling workgroups to presented prospective solutions. As such, they use evidence to guide changes in practice and lead the change while also measuring outcomes from implementing the change. Besides that, they are responsible for considering patient preferences when the change is being implemented (particularly when the patients are resistant to the change), and evaluating the quality of the current evidence that guides the EBP. On the other hand, a nurse manager is responsible for creating a culture of EBP by addressing the operational, budgetary and resources issues affecting EBP. Nurse managers link expectations with policy while encouraging nurse practitioners to incorporate evidence into their decision-making strategies. This means that the manager create unit-based culture whereby nurse practitioners practice while guided by EBP (Flaugher, Beyea & Slattery, 2015). In this respect, nurse practitioners and nurse managers differ in how they use and incorporate EBP.
