Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

Discuss health promotion and disease prevention as they pertain to CHILDHOOD OBESITY. Everything we do in nursing should be supported by evidence. Whether we are looking for ways to improve a hospital department\’s internal efficiency or looking how to improve a population\’s outcomes, there is underlying evidence that supports the principles of health promotion and disease prevention. Childhood obesity is a significant public health subject. Prevention and health promotion regarding childhood obesity can be achieved through health promotion activities in schools. School programs to educate children and implement activities that support increased physical activities, higher vegetable/fruit intake, avoiding fast food have been shown to prevent childhood obesity. Moreover, technology-based interventions that target healthy diet and physical activities are effective in preventing obesity among children.

Article 1

“Brown C, Halvorson E, Cohen G, Lazorick S & Skelton . (2015). Addressing Childhood Obesity: Opportunities for Prevention. Pediatr Clinical North America. 62(5): 1241–1261”

The aim of the article is to identify evidence-based elements that are essential in developing strategies to prevent childhood obesity. The article further discusses strategies such as school strategies, government, and parental strategies that can be used in combating and preventing childhood obesity. This article reviewed existing studies and research on the topic. Some of the strategies that the article suggests include: the primary care provider taking an active role in monitoring the weight, physical activities and feeding trends of children; policy review and implementing environmental interventions aimed at preventing obesity; school strategies; and family involvement in prevention of childhood obesity (Brown et al, 2015). Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

The evidence is relevant to my current practicum setting. This is because the article provides strategies that are effective in combating childhood obesity; the prevalence of childhood obesity is perilously high. Strategies recommended in the article provide interventions to combat and prevent childhood obesity in diverse settings and hence they are applicable in my practicum setting.

Article 2

“Lee A, Keugn V, Ho M & Kwong A. (2014). Childhood obesity management shifting from health care system to school system: intervention study of school-based weight management programme. BMC Public Health. 14(1128)”.

The study aimed to evaluate the impact of a school-based lifestyle intervention that incorporated health promotion activities. The health promotion activities targeted weight loss and behavior change for the students who were overweight or obese. Person-tailored weight management plan was developed in order to assist students in managing their weight (Lee et al, 2014). The article is supported by adequate research evidence. Moreover, the procedure utilized and data collection procedures are adequately described and are suitable for the study. Data was analyzed using distinguished statistical software, SPSS and McNemar test and ANOVA used in correlation tests. The results indicated that school-based weight management program was effective in reducing weight for obese and overweight students. The program involved education and counseling regarding weight management (Lee et al, 2014). Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

The evidence from the article is relevant in my current practicum setting. This is because during the practicum parents as well as children can be educated regarding weight management strategies in order to prevent and reduce weight in overweight and obese children.
