The impact of the IOM report on nursing education

Between 2008 and 2010, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) collaborated in identifying some of the factors the prevented nurses from actively being involved in bringing about change within the US healthcare scene. The collaboration between the two organizations formed a joint committee to identify these obstacles, with its mandate being not only to identify the obstacles but also how to address them with the intention to improving nursing practice efficiency and effectiveness. The committee presented its results in 2010 in a document titled “Future of Nursing Report” with the recommendation that reforms should be carried out to enhance the role of nurses within the health care industry (Institute of Medicine, 2015).

The future of nursing report made recommendations that affected nursing practice. Part of those recommendations was focused on nursing education and included calls for reforms. The committee first noted that nursing education imbued graduates with qualifications, skills, and experiences that were not fully used when they are assigned work assignments. It was particularly critical of the fact that the duties assigned to nursing personnel upon employment were not based on what they had learned through education and experience. Rather, the duties were assigned based on available work. Given this awareness, the report recommended that nursing curriculum should be routinely updated to match the more current trends and changes in the work environment (Mason et al., 2015). For instance, it is not uncommon to find subordinates who are better educated than their supervisors simply because the better-educated individual was employed at a later date than the less educated counterpart Leading Change , Advancing Health Essay . The committee next noted that the nursing curriculum applied in the US was not standardized. This was based on the awareness that although the nursing curriculum presented in schools across the country were complementary, the order, of course, differed greatly such that whatever course would be offered in one education institution during the first year could be offered during the second year in another institution despite the two institutions claiming to present the same nursing program. Although this would not be a problem if the individual started and finished the program within a single institution, a problem would arise if the student sought to change institutions and transfer credits. This issue was considered of importance since it is not uncommon for nursing personnel to change workstations from one city or state to the next one. This would make it difficult for those pursuing education programs to continue this programs in new institutions with the result that they would either be inconvenienced to continue learning in the initial institution, or repeat some of the courses in a new institution to be compliant with their graduation requirements, or halt the education until a more convenient solution is identified. Given this awareness, the committee recommended nursing curriculum standardization countrywide. Standardizing the curriculum would entail applying the same learning format, course project, and order. This would ensure that students could easily transition between institutions offering the same program within the country. This measure would encourage more nursing personnel to pursue further studies(Institute of Medicine, 2015). For instance, a someone pursuing a nursing in Alaska should be able to transfer to the same program in Florida for the same year of study. Based on the two observations and recommendations made in the report, it is clear that at the time the report was being prepared, nursing education was lacking Leading Change , Advancing Health Essay.

The IOM report calls for greater importance to be assigned to nursing practice. It notes that although nurses are intimately involved in providing primary care, their opinions are often not sought when making care decisions. The report calls attention to the fact that given how nurses are closely involved with patients, it would be unrealistic to assume that they cannot provide valuable insight to improve care approaches and outcomes. Given this knowledge, the report made the recommendation that nurses should be included as core members in teams making decisions about medical care. This implies that medical care approaches should be redesigned and reformed to assign medical personnel greater control, authority and responsibility when care decisions are made. At least, they should have the same level of authority as other medical personnel (Roussel, 2013). Given this awareness, I would follow the recommendation made in the report and assign nursing personnel greater control, authority and responsibility when making care decisions so that they would be consulted at every step that a decision is made concerning care approaches.

The IOM report focuses on the value of nursing personnel as leaders. It highlights their potential for undertaking leadership roles within the care environment. Firstly, the report calls for nurses to be better educated to improve their capacity to compete with other professionals. Secondly, it calls attention to the fact that nurses can take on a proactive role in patient advocacy and care decision-making. Finally, it encourages nursing personnel to be involved in medical research activities by asking that they match their opinions with tangible proof (Curran, 2015). In this respect, the report improves nurses’ capacity for leadership.
