Nursing Theory and Counseling Theory

The selected patient is suffering from depression after the loss of his father and separating from her family. The nursing theory that will be applied on the patient is the nursing need theory by Henderson and the counseling theory to be applied is the theory of interpersonal relations by Papleu. According to the nursing need theory, the advance practice nurse and nurses will play an integral role in defining the four concepts of the theory i.e. individual, health, environment, and nursing as they apply to the patient (Wheeler, 2014). Nursing Theory and Counseling Theory

In terms of the individual, the advance practice nurse will decide on clinical diagnosis of the patient to determine the extent of the depression. After such diagnosis, the patient will be given medications like antidepressants to treat the condition. Also, the patient will be required to avoid the depressive thoughts. The nurse’s role will be to explain the need for the patient to adhere to the medications and other advice given by the physician. He will explain how the persistent thoughts of the past impact negatively on other body systems as the happenings in the mind controls what happens to other parts of the body. Nursing Theory and Counseling Theory

In terms of the environment, the nurse will recommend activities for the patient such as attending church, joining a community group, sharing and seeking opinions of others of the best interventions to resolve the problem and engaging in recreational activities. Such engagements minimize exclusion and reduce the prevalence of the depressive thoughts.

To enhance good health, the nurse will conduct follow-up checks on the patient to ensure there is progress and recommend solutions to any pervasive stressors that lead to recurrence of the depressive thoughts. In terms of nursing, creative interventions will be designed such as explaining to the patient the need to reconcile with the partner and if it fails; the need to live independently and start a new family.

In applying the theory of interpersonal relations, at the orientation phase, the nurse will assess the patient to evaluate the level of his depression using approaches such as asking a few questions and identifying characteristics such as dysphoria. At the identification stage, the nurse then informs the patient that he has made an appropriate choice of seeking assistance. Since the depression appears developed, the nurse refers the patient to a doctor where tests are carried out to facilitate suitable diagnosis.

After diagnosis, the interpretation phase involves the nursing professional interacting with the patient to seek his thoughts and opinions on feelings after initial treatment. The nurse asks open-ended questions to enhance the flexibility of the patient when responding (Wolff, Meister, Härter & Kriston, 2016). The questions make the nurse understand the source of the conflicts that led to the separation and circumstances that led to loss of job. It becomes easier to offer remedies that are tailor-made to the situation based on the role of the nurse as a teacher and resource person (Petiprin, 2016). At the resolution phase, the nurse conducts follow-ups to ensure the identified care interventions are being followed.

The two theories are chosen due to their emphasis on the need to develop sophisticated nursing interventions that are tailor-made to suit the situation of the patient. The theories also demonstrate the diverse roles of the nursing professional that are based on a holistic approach to nursing practice (Van Grieken, Verburg, Koeter, Stricker & Nabitz, 2016).

One of the goals of the practicum experience is to promote the application of suitable theories to facilitate quality of care. Secondly, the experience facilitates the education of patients by nurses alongside other stakeholders such as family members and relatives of the patients. Thirdly, it provides critical skills in the application of knowledge to enhance safety of the patient. Nursing Theory and Counseling Theory

One of the objectives is that the practicum experience promotes the use of critical thinking skills amongst nurses to cultivate an environment of rational inquiry. Secondly, it aims at motivating a nurse towards adopting a culture of professionalism and excellence in diverse workplace settings. Thirdly, it ensures a nurse engages in leadership by facilitating interaction and guiding patients on the best care interventions for positive outcomes.
