Patient Description Assignment Essay

Reflect on a patient who presented with a cardiovascular, neurologic, respiratory, or gastrointestinal disorder during your Practicum Experience. Describe the patient’s personal and medical history, drug therapy and treatments, and follow-up care. Then, explain how the patient’s gender might have impacted or influenced her care. If you did not have an opportunity to evaluate a patient with this background during the last 10 weeks, you may select a related case study from a reputable source or reflect on previous clinical experiences. Patient Description Assignment Essay
*I wanted to write on nausea during 1st trimester, for a patient that is 12 weeks gestational age G1P0, no medical issues, healthy patient

Patient xx was a woman, 28 years old, gravida three para two, who reported that she, was approximately 12 weeks pregnant. She presented with serious nausea that persisted throughout the day but no vomiting. She also reported symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux like heartburn. Patient xx denied any uterine cramping or fever. Her bowel function was normal. She was relatively concerned because she did not have any nausea during her previous pregnancies. No other abnormality was noted. Follow-up evaluation at the 11th week indicated that fetal CRL had grown to 5.8 cm and the NT had thickened. An abdominal examination was performed and the exam ruled out peritonitis or intra-abdominal as the causes of nausea.

Treatment for patient xx aimed at improving the symptom and reducing maternal and fetal risks. To achieve this, a multimodal strategy was developed for the patient and the treatment modality involved dietary modification and drug therapy. Accordingly, patient xx was advised to avoid a large portion of meals and instead consume small quantities of food. The patient was also educated on consuming more protein than starch and taking more liquids in order to improve the gastric dysrhythmias and hence improve nausea (Jin, 2016). Antiemetic (phenothiazines) was also prescribed for the patient because it is an efficient dopamine antagonist that has demonstrated its efficacy in reducing nausea and vomiting in pregnant women (Heitmann et al, 2017).

Gender influence of Patient’s Care

Patient xx’s care was influenced by her gender. According to Thompson et al (2016) gender concordance might improve patient care as well as patient-healthcare interaction by promoting patient’s trust, enhanced communication, as well as patient satisfaction. In this case, patient xx was extremely cooperative, more inquisitive, and more concerned about her health status. Actually, better patient-healthcare provider communication is attributed to a positive influence in healthcare and represents a vital determinant in care delivery. Finally, since women are more likely to seek health care services than men, gender aspect must have impacted the patient’s adherence to the treatment regimen (Thompson et al, 2016).
