Peplau’s interpersonal theory is a nursing theory that can best guide my practice in psychotherapy. According to Ramesh (2014), Peplau’s interpersonal focuses upon interpersonal procedures along with a therapeutic relationship that occurs between the client and nurse. The interpersonal emphasis of Peplau’s model will require a nurse to deal with interpersonal procedures that takes place amid the client and nurse. The four stages of relationships between the nurse and patient are orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution. Ramesh (2014) asserts that during orientation, the person has sense a need and looks for professional help. The nurse assists the patient in identifying and understanding their difficulty and establishing the necessity for assistance. During identification, an individual identifies with people who can be of help to her or him. The nurse permits the patient to explore his or her feelings to enable the patient go through a disease as an experience that that leads to reorientation of feelings and strengthening of helpful personality forces and offering the required gratification (Ramesh, 2014).

In the exploration stage, the patient tries to obtain the value of what the relationship has offered. The nurse makes a projection of novel goals that the patient is needed to attain via individual effort along with power changes from the therapist. During resolution, a patient steadily abandons old goals and takes on novel ones. Through this process, a patient sets himself or herself from identifying with the therapist (Ramesh, 2014).

I chose Peplau’s interpersonal theory because it will provide me with a helpful framework to investigate clinical occurrences and guide my actions. Via interpersonal relationship, I will evaluate and assist a patient to interpersonally attain healthy anxiety levels and to enhance the client to interpersonally integrate healthy pattern, with the objective of promoting well-being, development and health. Additionally, this relationship will offer a framework for me to create, utilize and assess nursing care knowledge that is based on theory. Ramesh (2014) indicates, nurse theoretical knowledge, investigative skill and interpersonal competencies, along with patient needs and characteristics are significant elements in the development and result of the correlation.

Lego (2002) argues that in group therapy and formation of therapeutic relationships with group members, the nurse acts as a stranger, counselor, surrogate, teacher, resource person and leader. The counseling role entails working with a patient on present difficulties while the leadership role involves democratically working with the client. As a surrogate, the nurse figuratively stands in for the person in the life of the individual and as a stranger, the nurse objectively accepts the patient. As a resource person, the nurse interprets treatment plan to the client while as a teacher, the nurse offers information and assist the client to learn (Lego, 20012). The theory will help me have an understanding of the underlying cause of patients’ issues and problems. It will also assist me equip patients with suggestions and knowledge to enhance them deal with additional problems. Hough (2014) note that with a great prominence on the relationship amid the psychotherapist and client, psychodynamic therapy offers tools essential for progress. Group therapy plays a crucial role in the management of psychotic illness and is a portion of therapeutic experiences of hospitalized hospitals. The objective of every group differ, although the common aim is to help patients become more aware of themselves by interacting with other members of the group who offer feedback on their conduct, lessen isolation and help patients improve their interpersonal social skills(Koukourikos & Pasmatzi, 2014). I chose the psychodynamic theory of counseling because will be helpful in understanding emotional response of client to the counselor.

According to Hough (2014) patients may transfer negative or positive feelings to psychotherapist s. These feelings emerge from juvenile emotional responses to adults and therefore are not based upon any actual relation amid the client and the counselor. Transference feelings function unconsciously and the patient is not aware that answers to the psychotherapist might not be suitable. Therefore, i will be able to clearly see evidence of patient’s emotions during childhood in the psychotherapy relationship. A close look at both the positive and negative responses from the patient enables a psychotherapist to connect present styles of relationships with pervious problematic relationships.

Goals and objectives for the practicum experience

The first goal for the practicum experience in the psychotherapy course is to attain necessary clinical competencies and skills that will enable me to practice as a professional psychotherapist. The objective is to develop advanced skills and know-how in providing group and individual therapy, develop skill in crisis intervention and triage screening.


The second goal is to develop the attitude, awareness and knowledge required to display proficient behavior so as to practice as a qualified psychotherapist. The objectives are to display behavior that is a reflection of the attitude and values of psychology, to relate meaningfully and effectively in my professional relationships and to demonstrate attitudes and behavior that is in line with professional and personal self-care, reflection and self-awareness Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory Discussion.

The third goal is to attain the necessary competencies in individual diversity to be able to work as a professional psychotherapist. The objective is to exhibit skills, awareness and sensitivity in professionally dealing with diverse groups and individuals and to exhibit awareness of the effect of cultural, economic and social factors that cause change at the systems and individual level.

A timeline of practicum activities based on my practicum requirements

Psychotherapy practicum requires interns to attend seminars for case presentations and clinical topics presentations and placement within an agency. In the first year, I will start a psychotherapy skills class. In the second year, I will start practicum class along with placement within a local setting for two semesters. Placement in a counseling center a therapist trainee will help me in developing and refining my skills in developing positive relationships with patients, hypothesizing clients along with their distresses, creating and using a hypothetically based treatment plan with individual clients and utilize myself as a tool for therapy.

In the third year, I will start advanced in the placement of a counseling setting for. During this period, i will be able to learn on advanced psychological evaluations. In the fourth year, I will be placed in an advanced clinical setting to improve my skills relating with clients and developing theoretically based treatment plans.
