Leaders: Born or Made
The debate regarding whether or not leaders are made or born has been ongoing. Behavioral theorists argue that leaders are made through observation, teaching and learning. Conversely, the Trait and Great Man theories suggest that leadership traits are inherent and thus, leaders are born. The fact is that both the inborn and learned traits contribute to the effectiveness of leadership (Schafer, 2010).. Based on evidence from empirical studies, biological traits such as intelligence, brain activity, hormones, appearance, weight and height have an impact on the ability to become an effective leader. For instance, effective leaders have been found to have high levels of brain activities and emotional intelligence (Schafer, 2010). Effective leaders have personality traits such as charisma, empathy, vision, decisiveness, extroversion, confidence and effective communication. Other characteristics such as the ability to lead by example, inspire, motivate and make hard decisions are also influential Personality and Biological Traits of a Leader.
One of the biological traits that enhances my ability to become an effective leader is emotional intelligence. I also have other desired leadership traits such as good weight and physical appearance. I have the ability to manage my emotions when faced with negative and positive issues. In addition, I am able to monitor the emotions of other people and assist in managing them. My most notable personality trait that is necessary in leadership is extraversion. I like interacting and collaborating with people. I also have empathy, vision and charisma. The additional traits I have include the ability to motivate, communicate effectively and inspire others. One of the characteristics that I will need to improve through experience is the ability to make hard decisions. I usually find myself stuck in dilemma in instances where am required to make hard decisions yet there are many options to choose from. Another characteristic that I need to learn include confidence when addressing to many people.
